The game was first revealed at E3 2006 under the name Vision Gran Turismo. In an April 2008 interview, game creator Kazunori Yamauchi revealed that 150 people had worked on Gran Turismo 5 for four years, with all of Polyphony Digital's 120 employees working on GT5, and the game costing 50 times more to develop than 1997's Gran Turismo. The game is rumoured to be out on December 29 in 2009.
At Sony's E3 2009 Press Conference, a trailer for Gran Turismo 5 was shown. Many cars and tracks were shown in the trailer, as well as damage on a rally car, but no release date was revealed. In an interview with Eurogamer, Kazonuri Yamauchi said that "We've actually reached a point where we can probably release it anytime, except that you can also keep working as long as you want to as well, it's just a matter of timing."
Cars and Tracks
Gran Turismo 5 will feature over 1,000 cars and 80 tracks, though it is unclear if they are 80 unique tracks, or include variations on layout. One such course will be the Top Gear Test Track from Dunsfold Park in UK, popularized by the British automotive television show Top Gear. The playable demo of Gran Turismo 5 at Gamescom '09 featured the Tokyo Route 246 track, seen in previous incarnations of the game. Full interior modeling, as well as cosmetic and mechanical damage, will be featured for the first time in a Gran Turismo game. It has been confirmed that not all cars, only approximately 170 of the 1,000 vehicles, will implement these new features. According to Kazunori Yamauchi, this aspect of the game is not yet finalized. In a video and images released by the developer, a Subaru Impreza is featured with its bumpers hanging loose, hood bend upwards, and doors missing. Also, Saturn, Kia, Geo, Ferrari, Lamborghini, and Bugatti will make their first appearance in the game. Porsche will not be in the game due to contractual agreements with other developers. In an article briefly posted on Polyphony Digital's website, the introduction of electric cars was confirmed; this includes the latest Tesla Motors vehicle. Hybrids were previously included in GT4 with the Toyota Prius and the Honda Insight. Yamauchi said in an interview with Edge Magazine that Gran Turismo 5 could have some compatibility with the PSP version. He said, in an interview with G4, that "we’re going to make it so that you can actually export the cars for the PSP version into Gran Turismo 5, so you can export your garage."
